USA - A No-Kill Country
Tuesday, June 22, 2010
A plan has been formulated and will be discussed at the "No-Kill Conference" in Washington, DC. The plan is to make the US a no-kill country by 2015. So how can a country that euthanizes approximately 4 million dogs and cats each year become a no-kill nation? The plan is to do the same thing that Richard Avanzino did in San Francisco in 90s. And he credits the no-kill movement to one dog, Sido. Read more...
If You Don't Shoot the Messenger, They Might Shoot
Tuesday, June 22, 2010
For one Canadian family, Saturday was likely the saddest day of their lives. It all started when a police officer showed up at their door to notify them of a death in the family. Upon hearing the news, a member of the family went back in the home, but left the door open. Unfortunately, the five dogs in the house took that opportunity to run outside and bark at the officer. The officer was pinned up against a fence by the dogs, when one of them reportedly bit the officer. For protection he drew his weapon and shot and killed the dog. So now this poor family is dealing with the sudden death of a loved one and a beloved dog. Read more...

No Pet Dogs
Monday, June 21, 2010
"Dogs are Unclean" according to a new religious ruling. Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi made it clear that owning a dog as pet is wrong in the eyes of Islam. While there is no law against owning dogs in the Qur'an, there are many narrations in the faith that say they are unclean. This new ruling was put in place to clarify the stance of Islam and help stop the spread of western ideals and beliefs. While owning a dog for protection or herding is okay, having one in your home and treating it as a pet is not. Read more...
Stopping Animal Abuse
Friday, June 18, 2010
I was once asked what I would do if I witnessed someone abusing a dog. My answer was that I would beat the crap out of the abuser until they stopped or the police came. My reasoning behind this was that as a human I understand that the odds were very unlikely that the dog deserved this treatment, and the horrible animal abuser would likely continue to abuse animals and people in the future. Sure I could be arrested and I could have charges filed against me, but at least I would be standing up for those who have no voice. While in theory this sounds commendable, but is it realistic? Pain Management with Stem Cells for Dogs
Wednesday, June 16, 2010
Some think it is wonderful, while others believe it is controversial. So what do you think about Stem Cell Therapy for dogs? Vet-Stem is a company specializing in stem cell treatments for animals. Dog owners using the technology tout the improvements they have seen in their pets. Currently the treatments are used to treat arthritis and soft tissue damage. Veterinarians wishing to use the technology for their patients must first go through training and become certified. As great as the treatments are said to be, they are quite expensive. However for those who claim to have their best friends back, they feel the money was well spent. Read more...

Dogs Donating Blood
Thursday, June 10, 2010
Sure we have all heard the about the importance of donating blood, but did you know that your furry friend can donate too? Animal Blood Banks began back in the early 90s. However with the advance of veterinary medicine, more blood is needed. Donating blood is relatively simply and doesn't take long. All animal blood banks have different requirements for animals to participate including age, size and health. Plus many of these companies offer some form of compensation from discounted veterinary fees to cash payments. So if your dog is calm and friendly you should look into the possibility of donating blood. Read more...
Are Kids Safe With Dogs?
Wednesday, June 9, 2010
For many people the idea of a perfect family is two parents, a couple of well behaved children and the family dog right in the middle of it all. While this may seem ideal, there should be concerns especially when it comes to the dog with the kids. Life is not a Norman Rockwell painting, and accidents can and will happen. So the question is "are you putting your family at risk?" Recent stories of young children being mauled by the family dog, or babies in carriers dying from vicious dog attacks prompts the question can you ever leave a child alone with a dog? Read more...

A couple was passing through Wichita Falls when the unexpected happened. Tuesday morning they loaded up their van with their belongings and seven dogs as they prepared to continue their road trip to Flagstaff, Arizona for a national Swedish Valhund event. Hot Dogs
Tuesday, June 8, 2010
It is only the beginning of June and already the reports are all over the news. People continue to leave their dogs in a car. People who claim to love their animals, and people who really should know better. What about the professional dog handler who last year left 8 dogs in kennels in her van in her driveway overnight? Seven of the Eight dogs died. Or the police officer who's K-9 partner was left in a car 107 degree temperatures for 13 hours. Or the Animal Control Officer in Houston who allowed 8 dogs to die in a hot van. The point is these people are morons. Not one of these dogs had to die, it was completely preventable. Read more...
No Warrant Needed for Animal Welfare Check
Monday, June 7, 2010
A California court determined that if police hear a dog crying they may enter your property without a warrant. A dog crying in distress is similar to a person in distress, and police may enter for a welfare check without a search warrant. This ruling came about when a man convicted of cruelty to animals decided to appeal the conviction because officers handcuffed him and entered his home after receiving complaints about a dog crying. Police found an injured dog and a dead dog in a freezer. Read more...
Puppy Mill Paradigm
Thursday, June 3, 2010
In my youth pet stores were everywhere, and they were always full of people looking at the adorable puppies and kittens. Over the last few years, the pet stores have started to go the way of the California condor, nearly extinct. While people are rallying to save the large bird of prey, most people are praying for demise of an industry that preys on uninformed people and use animals to lure them in. Pet stores, especially Petland, have been accused of selling puppy mill dogs to the unsuspecting public for years. As more people begin to understand the horrible conditions these dogs live in, the more they want stop these types of facilities. Austin, TX is the most recent city to discuss a ban of retail sales for companion animals. Read more...
Communicating with Dogs
Wednesday, June 2, 2010
A few days ago we were expecting some international visitors. They arrived late in the evening and stopped by for welcome cup of coffee and a hello before they retired to their hotel for some much needed rest. We were all excited and a little nervous for our introduction. As my husband arrived at our home with our guests, my dog decided to break the tension by giving them the warmest and most friendly greeting she could manage. My husband and I were mortified by her behavior. Our well trained dog showed no manners at all. A little while later, my husband took our exhausted guests to their hotel. Read more...

Stray Dogs
Wednesday, May 26, 2010
The Dallas City Council just passed an ordinance requiring the people who find stray dogs to make reasonable effort contact the dog's owners within 72 hours of finding the dog. If people are found in violation of the ordinance they can be fined up to $500. The citizen who was behind this ordinance had his dogs stolen from his yard two years ago, and police never forced the people in possession to return his dogs. His search for justice has created a law which punishes the good samaritans who take in lost animals, not the irresponsible dog owners who let their dog's run at large. The guy who backed this law should have tried to create a law that punishes dog-nappers, not people who try to help lost or stray animals. Read more...
Are These Products Appropriate for Dogs?
Thursday, May 20, 2010
Now I have officially heard everything. Has the world gone mad? (Sorry after reading this story, I refuse to use dog themed puns like "to the dogs".) For those people who have everything except the ability to distinguish between dogs and people, here is the newest ridiculous dog item. Sure it may not be as absurd as $4.2 million tiara, or custom dog homes with plasma tvs and hot tubs, but this crosses a different line in my opinion. Why don't you give your dog a nice box of Chewgars, rawhide cigars. Read more...
Dog Poop DNA Debate
Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Owning an animal is just like everything else in life, it has its ups and downs. Personally I think the pros outweigh the cons, but I understand that not everyone shares my opinion. So when your dog drops a problem in the public area or your neighbor's yard, you as a responsible dog owner have the nasty chore of picking it up. Unfortunately, many dog owners completely ignore it or simply "pretend" to pick it up. Well this neglect has caused one condominium community in Baltimore to debate a solution. Their answer: Doggy DNA. Read more...
Do You Have a Dog Fur Coat?
Monday, May 17, 2010
Cruella Deville is not the only one interested in dog fur. The US government will soon be debating the same topic. It seems that while the FTC requires garments that contain fur to list the type of fur used, this only applies to garments with more than $150 worth of animal pelt. So under this little loophole, many garments containing small amounts of fur are not required to list what the fur is made of, and are selling the garment as "faux fur". However studies have shown that the "faux fur" you are purchasing commonly contains fur from raccoon dogs, domestic dogs and/or rabbits. Read more...

A Less Common Form of Dog Abuse
Friday, May 14, 2010
Animal abuse regardless of the form it takes is wrong. But especially wrong is the type of abuse that is making headlines this week. In two different cases from two different countries charges have been filed for sexual abuse of a dog. The first case stems from a suspected bestiality farm in Washington State where police found video of a British man sexually abusing large breed dogs. The second case is from Ontario, Canada where a dog was so badly abused that it was unable to move and was eventually euthanized. Read more...

Are You Really a Service Dog?
Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Most of us are familiar with Americans with Disabilities Act which gives people with disabilities the right to bring service dogs into all public places including restaurants, grocery stores and offices. However did you know that not all states have a program to certify service dogs, and owners of these animals are not required to provide documentation of their disability or their service dog's credentials? This can lead to misunderstandings, policy abuse and bitterness of behalf of business owners. Read more...
"Creating the Labradoodle is the Great Regret of My Life"
Monday, May 3, 2010
Wally Conran developed the much coveted labradoodle in 1988. At the time he was the manager of the puppy program at the Royal Institute of the blind. The breed was created for a blind woman from Hawaii who needed a seeing eye dog, but her husband suffered from allergies. So Conran bred a working stock labrador with a poodle, hoping for a dog that would shed less yet still possess the temperament and trainability needed for a service dog. Conran said that breeding these dogs was the biggest regret of his life. The hybrid or designer breeds are now in high demand and fetch a high price. Read more...

Is Breed Specific Legislation the Answer?
Friday, April 9, 2010
Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is regulating or banning certain "dangerous" dog breeds. So who is right, or is it simply a matter of opinion? Read more...
Police Shoot Dogs
Thursday, April 8, 2010
Why do police have to shoot dogs? In the past 2 days I have read 3 stories about police officers shooting dogs. Are there no other solutions? Why must they use guns on dogs who are simply barking in an attempt to protect their owners and territories. None of these dogs hurt the officers. They are dogs simply being dogs and doing what they are bred to do. Read more...

Tuesday, April 6, 2010
A ruling by a Pennsylvania Court upholds a decision by the Department of Public Welfare. The decision is that James Douris, a disabled veteran, is unable for more food stamps to feed his service dog. The man who is wheelchair bound and unable to work uses his food stamps to feed himself and his boxer. However, the $176 he gets per month is not enough. Because his dog is a service dog and Douris is unable to function without his help, he wanted extra food stamps so he could feed the dog. The court ruled that food stamps are for humans only, and feeding the dog should be the concern of another organization. Read more...
