Dog Grooming - How to Clip the Coat
Difficult
It is recommended that you supervise a professional and ask questions before you try this at home. Dogs have different coat types that require varying care. This section will only cover light trimming.
Brush your dog thoroughly before you attempt to cut. Make sure all tangles, mats and loose hair have been removed.
It may be helpful to dampen the dog's coat before starting. This is most helpful on dogs with wavy or curly coats, as it will straighten out the coat.
Using scissors, gently comb out sections of the hair, and trim the ends. Be careful not to cut it too short or close to the skin, as you could accidentally nick the dog with the scissors. Trim just a little at a time, you can always go back and cut it shorter if it is still too long.
This process will likely take a while. Be patient and move slowly. Try to keep the dog's hair a uniform length and make sure it blends well and does not look too choppy.
Be sure to trim between the foot pads.
Let the dog dry naturally to allow the coat to take its shape. When the dog is dry, check the coat for any missed areas and complete touchups.
When it comes to clipping the dog, when in doubt take them to the groomer.
