Use a tackle box type of container and label it as a Dog First Aid Kit on all sides. Inside, include the following:

Medicine:

With the Medicine, please include the proper dosing instructions.

  • Benadryl – should give ½ mg per pound every 8 hours. Use for allergies or as an anti-histamine.
  • Aspirin – 5 mg per pound every 12 hours. For Pain and to relieve swelling. (Never give a dog Tylenol or Ibuprofen!)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide – to induce vomiting, 1 - 3 Tbsp. every 10 minutes until dog vomits.
  • Pepto Bismol – 1 tsp per 5 pounds every 6 hours. To ease an upset stomach or stop vomiting.
  • Kaopectate – 1 ml per pound every 2 hours. To ease an upset stomach or stop vomiting.
  • Immodium – 1 mg per 15 pounds, 1 to 2 times per day. To stop diarrhea.
  • Mineral Oil – as a laxative, 5 – 30 ml per day. Do not use long term.

Supplies:

  • Cotton gauze bandage wrap – 1.5 inches wide and 3 inches wide.
  • Ace Bandage
  • First Aid Tape
  • Cotton gauze pads
  • New Skin liquid bandage – can be used on the pads of the feet.
  • Iodine tablets – to make drinking water out of stream water.
  • Oral syringe – to administer liquid oral medicine.
  • Needle and thread
  • Safety Pins
  • Razor blade – wrapped in paper for safety.
  • Matches
  • Tweezers
  • Hemostat – for removing ticks, thorns etc.
  • Small blunt end scissors
  • Canine rectal thermometer

You should also include a card with emergency contact information, and a copy of your dog’s vaccination records.
