What are skin disorders?

Did you know skin problems are the most common reason that people bring their dogs to the veterinarian? There are many reasons for skin problems including dry skin, insect infestation, allergies, hair loss, infections and cancer. Determining the cause of the skin irritation is important to treat the problem.

Symptoms of Skin disorders

Due to the large number of skin disorders, there are many different symptoms. Some of the most common signs your dog has a skin irritation are frequent scratching, licking, lumps, sores and scabs, rashes, hair loss, red and inflamed skin and visible insect infestation.

Diagnosing Skin Disorders

To get a precise diagnosis of skin disorders your veterinarian will likely perform a number of diagnostic tests. Some common tests are blood and urine tests, microscopic analysis of skin and hair, and skin swabs. Most of these tests will take a few days to return results. Once a diagnosis has been made your vet will begin a series of treatments to help.

Treating Skin Disorders

Depending on the severity of the diagnosis your veterinarian will likely prescribe one or more of the following treatments.

Topical ointments and creams – These ointments are applied directly to the skin for maximum benefit. Some common topical ointments are insecticides, medicated shampoos, antibiotics and corticosteroids.

Systemic medications – These are medications given orally or injected and treat the whole body. Common systemic medications include antibiotics, steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Elimination Diet – When your vet suspects that a food allergy may be causing the skin irritations, he may tell you to change your dog food to eliminate possible allergens. This generally happens in stages where for a week or two you will remove one ingredient from his diet like wheat. If the symptoms don’t improve you will eliminate another ingredient for a week or two. This process continues until the symptoms are alleviated.

Natural Treatments and Supplements – sometimes your veterinarian will give you options for natural treatments to ease skin irritations. Lavender, green tea, peppermint oil and witch hazel can reduce inflammation and itching. Consult your vet before starting any natural treatments to make sure they will help your dog with their specific needs.

Preventing Skin Disorders

The best way to prevent skin disorders is to provide quality grooming based on the dog breed needs. Healthy coats are the key to preventing skin problems. Other ways to reduce skin problems are avoiding excess time in the sun, feed your dog a quality diet, prevent insect infestations in your home and yard with natural products that are dog safe.
