Test 1: Beginning Problem Solving
Supplies:
- · An empty can, mug or cup (should be opaque)
- · A small smelly treat your dog enjoys.
- · A stopwatch
The Test:
Have your dog sit in front of you. If your dog will not sit and stay, you will need to have another person hold them still. Show your dog the treat and let them sniff it. Place the treat about 6 feet in front of them on the ground. Cover the treat with the can. Release your dog and encourage them to get the treat. When you release your dog, start the stopwatch.
Scoring:
- · 5 points - If the dog knocks the can over and gets the treat in 5 seconds or less.
- · 4 points - if the dog knocks the can over and gets the treat in 5 to 15 seconds.
- · 3 points - if the dog knocks the can over and gets the treat in 15 to 30 seconds
- · 2 points - if the dog knocks the can over and gets the treat in 30 to 60 seconds.
- · 1 point - if the dog fails to get the treat in less than 60 seconds.
