What are Worms?

Worms are parasites which generally live in the stomach or intestines of the dog. There are many types of worms; however the most common are hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms and whipworms.

Symptoms of Worms

The typical signs of a worm infestation are diarrhea, weight loss, anemia and blood in the feces. Not all types of worms will produce symptoms.

Diagnosis of Worms

Most worms can be detected by a fecal exam performed by your vet at annual visits. Some worms are so small that they can only be seen my microscopes. However large worms like tapeworms are visible by the naked eye. If you suspect your dog may have a worm infestation bring a fecal sample to your vet for testing.

Treatment of Worms

Once your vet has found worms in the stool, they can prescribe the correct treatment. There are many approved medications to treat worms, however there is no pill that will treat all worms so it is important to have a diagnosis from your vet before starting any treatment. Treatments vary between liquids, chewable tablets, pills, pastes and injections.

Prevention of Worms

To prevent worms most worming products can be started at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Consult your vet before using any worming products. It is also recommended that dog kennels and runs are not on dirt, where the worms and larvae live. Keep grass trimmed short. Groom your dog regularly.
