A member of the Pastoral group, the Belgian Malinois is one of four breeds associated with the Belgian Shepherd Dog. The other associated breeds are Broenendale, Laekenois, and Tervuren, where the only difference is the length and texture of the coat. The Malinois is frequently confused with the German Shepherd. They stand 22 to 26 inches and weigh 50 to 75 pounds. Standard colors are fawn or mahogany with a black overlay.
Belgian Malinois TemperamentThese dogs are affectionate, and good with other pets and children. They need to be a part of the family and require a lot of attention. If ignored they will "entertain" themselves often in destructive ways. These dogs have a protective nature, and can make a good guard dog.
Belgian Malinois GroomingThis breed has short hair that requires little grooming, outside of the occasional brushing. Severe shedding is common twice a year.
Belgian Malinois TrainingUnlike German Shepherds, the Malinois does not respond to harsh training methods. As these dogs are very intelligent, they can easily be trained for herding, tracking and sniffing. They score well in obedience tests.
