Dog Training - Teaching your Dog not to Jump on People
Most puppies hate to be alone, and are very excited when you (or the pizza delivery guy) come home. One of the ways they show this is to jump on you to greet you. As innocent as this seems to the puppy, it can be a big annoyance to you and your guests.
The best method to stop jumping is to ignore the habit. Puppies want attention, and they often don’t seem to care whether it is negative or positive attention. Next time your puppy jumps up to greet you, say “ah-ah” in a loud clear voice. Fold your arms over your chest and turn your back to the dog. Wait 3 to 5 seconds. Then turn back to the dog and praise them if they are sitting or standing quietly. Continue this practice every time they jump on you. They will soon understand that jumping does not get them any attention.
If this does not work you can try slightly lifting your knee. This way when the puppy jumps on you, they will hit your knee with their chest. It shouldn’t hurt the dog, but will take them back for a moment. After they jump into your knee a couple of times, they should be more reluctant to jump up.
